Thank you for that comment, Lore, and I will try to be wise as well as witty in future. It appears to be a winning combination ... I also believe that certain people want us to believe that we, the human race, are predominantly nasty. But we wouldn't have come this far if that were true; we're actually by nature as well as nurture, communally minded and cooperative.

Thank you! What a great story that is, and well told, too. I shall subscribe ...

Sometimes, humanity exceeds our expectations...it's too bad that one has to have a bad accident to be reminded of it.

Thank you for being one of my readers, Navyo, and of course, you are right; kindness breeds more of the same and we are always in need of it. Also, I shall try my best to live up to being astute, wise and witty in the future! And yes, I am healing, in stages...see you in the fall!

Dear Monika, kindness is indeed invincible and your story proves that it still, if nothing else, exists and that it is the fabric that holds our rickety collective structure together. I'm sorry you had to go through such pain from your fall, yet as you say, falling is a metaphor. I wish you a full recovery (or has that happened already?) and that your astute, wise and witty observations of our current melodrama make it to Substack post-haste, or given its technology, poste restante.

I have enjoyed the kindness of others in so many ways that have occurred out of the blue, a miracle no less, as your first-aid man in the SUV. But kindness is a milieu, a vibe made visible, not just something one receives. The more one gives the more kindness happens as a result, has been my experience countless times. And not only from the direction one gives to. Kindness is a currency.

I look forward to more Old and Bold. Happy Summer!

Happy anniversary indeed. I agree that the strangers on the sidewalk can be your lifeline. I had a bad bicycle accident some years ago, and wound up lying in the road with multiple injuries and in need of urgent medical attention. Out of nowhere people turned up, kept me warm, called the ambulance, took care of my bike and even called my wife. This sort of event can reaffirm some level of confidence in our fellow man, if only for the short term.

Dear Monika, I particularly love this piece! So well written and at the same time deep and funny! I also think that kindness more often happens than we normally expect. I make this experience quite often when I go out with my handycapped daughter Clara - so many people who offer a hellping hand , being pleased to be able to help. Thank you for your wise and witty writing on Substack and all the best for the many articles you will hopefully write to the delight of your readers!
